Oprah Winfrey Reveals Beyoncé and Rihanna Were Considered for “The Color Purple” Cast
The much-anticipated movie musical, The Color Purple, has been making waves with its star-studded cast featuring Danielle Brooks, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, and Fantasia. However, according to producer and original cast member Oprah Winfrey, the lineup could have looked very different.
In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Oprah disclosed that both Rihanna and Beyoncé were initially considered for roles in the film. However, as the project’s budget escalated to $90 to $100 million, discussions shifted to securing high-profile names like Beyoncé and Rihanna. Oprah, keen on providing opportunities to other talented actors, opted for a different approach.

“To be completely honest about it, if you were doing this film for $30 or $40 million, the interest in the cast would be very different,” Winfrey explained. “Once the film moved to $90 to $100 million, then everybody wants us to bring Beyoncé. ‘Can you get Beyoncé or can you get Rihanna?’ So we’re sitting in a room saying, ‘Listen, we love Beyoncé. We love Rihanna, but there are other actors who can do this job.'”
Both Beyoncé and Rihanna, amidst their busy schedules with the Renaissance World Tour and various business ventures, were graciously considered. Oprah emphasized the need to acknowledge the availability of other equally capable actors.
“I do remember conversations about, ‘Y’all, Beyoncé is going to be busy this year.’ It wasn’t even a negotiation because you’re not getting Beyoncé,” Oprah added.
As the film project unfolded, Oprah’s thoughtful consideration of casting choices aimed to create a balanced ensemble, ensuring the spotlight shone on a diverse array of talents.
