Fantasia Shines in “The Color Purple” – Box Office Success and Critical Acclaim
“The Color Purple,” the musical adaptation that hit theaters on Christmas Day, experienced a remarkable box office opening, grossing $18 million. This achievement marked the largest Christmas Day opening for a film since 2009 and the second-biggest Christmas Day opening of all time, following 2009’s “Sherlock Holmes.”
Critics and audiences alike have praised the film, with an impressive 89 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Among the standout performances, Fantasia, the singer and former American Idol winner, has received particular acclaim for her role as Celie Harris-Johnson.

Fantasia reprised the role of Celie from the Broadway musical on which the film is based. Notably, the character of Celie was originally portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg in the Oscar-winning 1985 film adaptation of “The Color Purple.”
