Moana Sets Sail for New Adventures in ‘Moana 2’ First Look
Disney has unveiled a glimpse of Moana‘s next chapter in a new image from the upcoming sequel, Moana 2. The photo depicts a noticeably older Moana, hinting at the passage of time since her initial voyage.
The studio synopsis confirms a three-year jump from the original film’s events. Moana embarks on “an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui.” Joined by Maui and a fresh crew of seafarers, she’ll navigate “dangerous, long-lost waters” in an all-new adventure.
Both Auli’i Cravalho, who rose to fame voicing Moana in the first film, and Dwayne Johnson, returning as the demigod Maui, reprise their roles. The 2016 original saw Moana as a spirited teenager setting sail to find Maui and restore Te Fiti’s heart. Moana 2 suggests she’ll be around 19 or 20 in this new chapter.
In a surprising February announcement, Disney revealed Moana 2 would hit theaters in November. Originally planned as a television series, the project’s quality reportedly impressed CEO Bob Iger enough to warrant a big-screen release.
While Johnson and Cravalho’s return was initially uncertain, both actors confirmed their involvement. However, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the first film’s musical mastermind, won’t be back. Instead, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa, who collaborated on the original score, will join forces with Grammy-winning songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (known for their Unofficial Bridgerton Musical) to create new music for Moana 2.
Disney is also developing a separate live-action adaptation of Moana.
