Keanu Reeves’ Exhaustion Playing John Wick Almost Led to His Character’s Demise

The iconic John Wick film series, known for its relentless action and a vengeful protagonist, seemed to have reached its conclusion with Chapter 4. However, it appears that Keanu Reeves, who portrays the titular character, was ready to bid farewell to the franchise.

In a recent interview with Collider, franchise producer Basil Iwanyk discussed how physically and emotionally draining it had become for Reeves to portray the relentless assassin. After the second, third, and fourth movies, Reeves found the experience exhausting, and he expressed his desire to bring a definitive end to his character’s journey.

Iwanyk revealed, “After the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th movie, making these films is so exhausting and it destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally. By the end, he’s always like, ‘I can’t do this again,’ and we agree with him. The guy is just a shell of himself because he just goes off and goes for it. He was like, ‘I wanna be definitively killed at the end of this movie.’ We were like, ‘You know, we’ll leave a 10% little opening.‘”

However, the allure of that 10% chance of returning proved irresistible. Now, Keanu Reeves and series director Chad Stahleski are collaborating to determine the direction of an unexpected fifth installment in the franchise.

Iwanyk commended Reeves and Stahelski, likening their partnership to legendary songwriting duo Paul McCartney and John Lennon, with himself in the role of Ringo. While he didn’t officially confirm the production of John Wick: Chapter 5, Iwanyk stated, “We all want another John Wick. We don’t know what it looks like and when it will happen, but we love each other and we love this world.”

For fans eagerly awaiting the next installment of John Wick, there are other projects to look forward to in the meantime, such as the TV spinoff The Continental and the Ana de Armas-led spinoff movie Ballerina.
