Decoding the Mystery of “Lacy” on Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts Album

Olivia Rodrigo made quite the weekend impact with the release of her highly anticipated album, Guts, which serves as a follow-up to her historic 2021 debut, Sour. While the album’s 12 tracks may only last 39 minutes, the questions it raises are bound to occupy fans for hours.

One of the burning questions pertains to the track “Lacy,” an acoustic ballad in which Rodrigo expresses deep envy towards someone referred to as “the sweetest thing on this side of hell.” The lyrics invite speculation, leaving fans to wonder who exactly “Lacy” might be.

In the outro of the song, Rodrigo softly croons, “Lacy, oh, Lacy / It’s like you’re out to get me / You poison every little thing that I do / Lacy, oh, Lacy / I just loathe you lately / And I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you / Yeah, I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you.“

The mystery deepens as fans ponder whether “Lacy” is a pseudonym for a single individual, perhaps a “dazzling starlet” reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot—could it even be Taylor Swift? Alternatively, does the song amalgamate multiple people or a more abstract concept, with the impression that it’s directed at one person?

Much like the questions surrounding other tracks on Guts, the true identity of “Lacy” remains veiled. When questioned about whether her song “Vampire” is about Taylor Swift, Rodrigo told The Guardian, “How do I answer this? I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing.”

As the enigma of “Lacy” lingers, fans eagerly await any potential clues or revelations that might offer insight into the song’s subject.
