Sean Paul Unravels The Mystery Behind His Stage Name
Jamaican rapper and worldwide sensation Sean Paul, finally breaks down the meaning of his name. It seems that the artist is a fan of Guyanese cricket player Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
In a recent documentary about the making of his 2003 hit “Get Busy,” he explains, “There’s a famous cricketer in Trinidad [named] Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Everybody was like, ‘Sean da Paul,’ and that name stuck.”
He also replied to a tweet, confirming the news: “If u didnt kno ~ now you kno: big up #Chanderpaul.”

Born as Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques OD, the 49-year-old revealed that he “started to say it in shows and met the dude Chanderpaul years later, and he’s like, ‘Yo!’ But yeah, big up to Shivnarine Chanderpaul.”
For more than 20 years, Paul has been using the name in his songs. The rapper who grew popular in Jamaica, doesn’t forget his roots and still resides there, saying “A lot of people ask me why I still live here. These people made me. They built me into what I am today.”
