Lorde Announces The Name of The New Album

Lorde is making another big movie with the announcement of her long-awaited fourth studio album, “Virgin.” The album is set for release on June 27. And if her teaser is anything to go by—”100% written in blood”—we’re in for her most raw and unfiltered project yet.

Aside from the announcement, she also made several big reveals. Thus, she mentioned the album’s title and release date. Also, provocative cover art is on her website on Wednesday morning. The artwork is a striking blue-tinted x-ray of a pelvis adorned with a central zipper, belt buckle, and the outline of an IUD. Fans should know that signals an era defined by both vulnerability and unapologetic power.

“Virgin” features songwriting and production from Grammy-winning hitmaker Dan Nigro, and genre-shifting artist Devonté Hynes of Blood Orange. Also among the creators are Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, and longtime collaborator Buddy Ross. The album on Apple Music lists 11 tracks, including the recently released single “What Was That.”

Lorde Making a Celebration For “What Was That”

To celebrate the arrival of “What Was That,” Lorde hosted a spontaneous fan gathering at New York City’s Washington Square Park on April 23. With Dev Hynes by her side, she played the single through park speakers. Also, she danced and sang along with an ecstatic crowd of fans. Footage from the event forms the backbone of the song’s music video. Thus offering a heartfelt, DIY homage to her community.

In a voice note released alongside the announcement, Lorde teased her return with the sentiment.

“Everything is about to change.” She added, “These are the last moments where it’s just us, which is crazy. But so right. I’m so ready.”

If that weren’t enough to stoke anticipation, Lorde also made a surprise appearance at Coachella during the festival’s first weekend. She joined Charli XCX onstage for a high-voltage performance of their song “Girl, So Confusing.”

With Virgin, it seems Lorde is preparing to turn the page once again—redefining herself in a way only she can: fearless, poetic, and utterly magnetic.
